This is the first week of performances at The Grove Theatre a brand-spanking new amphitheatre in Fenelon Falls. The second evening of performances included the dynamic duo of improv, Colin Mochrie and Debra McGrath opened by the ever energetic and witty Elvira Kurt.
It was exciting and fitting that Nicole Myers-Mitchell welcomed everyone starting with the Acknowledgement that the outdoor venue that we were all enjoying was on Michi Saagiig Nishnaabeg territory. Listening to Nicole while at the same time appreciating the trees and all round beauty of the theatre added to the warm and heartfelt greeting.
In a personal conversation, Thom Nyhuus, Customer Service Supervisor, reiterated The Grove Theatre’s commitment to doing a respectful and informed Land Acknowledgement at each event. Hopefully this will be an example that other organizations in the Kawarthas will wish to emulate.
If you have an opportunity to open a meeting or speak to a group, you can find some suggestions to help you get started in the resources section. On this page there is also an example of an acknowledgement that is approved by Curve Lake First Nation. The most important thing to remember is that the sentiment expressed ought to be genuine and that the words are more than rote repetition.
