 Centre for Indigenous Knowledge

The Mishkodeh is a vision for a land-based learning centre in downtown Bobcaygeon. The Mishkodeh Project was inspired by conversations with Curve Lake First Nation scholar and Elder Doug Williams (Gidigaa Migizi) and members of the Truth and Reconciliation Community – Bobcaygeon (TRC-B). The history of mishkodehs dates far back in time when the Indigenous peoples created clearings through controlled burning techniques to cultivate trees and medicinal plants and to have spaces for their communities to gather. This includes this land in Bobcaygeon on the shallow rapids between Pigeon Lake and Sturgeon Lake.

As a community group, TRC-B continues to learn about being in good relationships with our fellow TRC-Bobcaygeon members, with Indigenous friends, advisors and leaders, with community minded individuals and organizations in the City of Kawartha Lakes, but especially with the land.

It was out of this focus and mandate of building these relationships that the vision for the Mishkodeh began. Since then the scope of this project has demanded that a formal approach, with a Board of Directors, be established to guide this dream to reality.  Consequently, the Board of Directors of the Mishkodeh Centre for Indigenous Knowledge (MCIK) have been busy behind the scenes securing Charitable Status for the MCIK. Now that that is in place, informational and fund raising events can begin in earnest.

Our belief is that the Mishkodeh Centre for Indigenous Knowledge will expand on this mission of nurturing relationships through land-based learning and bringing Indigenous Knowledge to the larger community. We are delighted to support the MCIK in their work.
