September 30th, National Truth & Reconciliation Day (Orange T-shirt – Every Child Matters Day) is quickly approaching – that time when we commemorate all the Indigenous children who never returned home from the Indian residential schools as well as the survivors. TRC-Bobcaygeon is again holding an event to mark this important Day at the Boyd Museum in Bobcaygeon at 5:00 on September 30th.
Unity Drum Group will be there. This group represents the collective talents of Barb Rivett, Brenda Maracle O’Toole, and Heather Shpuniarsky. They are a blended Indigenous and settler, a cappella women’s drum group, who have been performing their own works that have been influenced from many Indigenous cultures as well as traditional Indigenous music, for over 18 years. The group has performed at numerous venues: from presentations to schools, social groups, conferences to music festivals mostly in Eastern Canada. Each member is either a retiree and/or alumni and Indigenous Studies faculty of Trent. Unity has performed the honour song for each convocation at Trent for over 18 years.
